Intensive Reformer Certification Course
The STOTT PILATES® Intensive Program (Level 1) is intended for those already working in the fields of fitness or movement, or who have completed the Functional Anatomy course and have met the Pilates class requirements. The focus is on expanding a student’s current knowledge while delivering instruction in STOTT PILATES principles and in Essential and Intermediate exercises in a fast-paced format.
Building on your industry knowledge, this course teaches you to design and lead the Level 1 Essential and Intermediate STOTT PILATES Reformer repertoire for personal or group training settings for a range of clients. You will leave with a solid foundation and the required skills to develop effective and motivating Pilates Reformer programs.
Upon completion of the Reformer Level 1 course, you will be able to teach the STOTT PILATES method of exercise as apprentices. Upon passing the exam, you will be recognized as a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor. Only upon the receipt of your certificate will you be entitled to identify themselves as a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor.

General course objectives
- How to apply STOTT PILATES biomechanical principles of core stability, breathing, and alignment to all exercises
- A complete breakdown of each exercise
- Exercise goals, muscular initiation, and movement sequencing
- Modifications to increase or decrease exercise intensity
- Modifications for specific body types and postural issues
- How to recognize optimal and less than optimal movement patterns
- A variety of programming options to keep clients motivated
- Effective communication, verbal cues, and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation
What you will learn
- The STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles
- Essential, Intermediate, and Power workouts
- Effective use of the reformer to enhance torso stability and strength, peripheral extremity conditioning, joint stability, flexibility, balance, and coordination
- Effective communication and observational skills
- Verbal cueing and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation
- Theory and practice of postural analysis
- 139 exercises plus modifications for specific body types, postural issues and conditions
- How to incorporate resistance equipment to support and intensify exercises
- Exercise layering related to effective program design
- Workout composition for personal and group training
Requirements of certification
- 50 hours of instruction and supervised teaching
- Minimum of 10 hours of observation
- Minimum of 40 hours of physical review
- Minimum of 25 hours of practice teaching
- Total: 125 hours
Observation, practice teaching, and physical review
A minimum number of hours of observation, practice teaching, and physical review are required for all courses and should be completed between the instructional sessions at any PILATES facility. Additional training may be required before certification. Practice teaching and physical review hours must be logged outside of class time. The practice logs must be submitted on your exam date .
Observation
Includes watching sessions taught by a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor or relevant STOTT PILATES’ videos.
Physical review
Means physically performing the exercises learned in class. Taking a class with a Certified Instructor or working out with video can qualify as physical review hours, and can be completed individually or with other students.
Practice teaching
Hours can be fulfilled by instructing family, fellow students, friends, or clients.
Advanced Reformer Certification Course
During the Advanced (Level 2) Reformer course students learn to apply STOTT PILATES® biomechanical principles to exercises that require a higher degree of strength, balance, and coordination. These courses can be taken immediately after the corresponding Level 1 course.
Learn to use the various Reformer components and accessories to intensify Reformer repertoire and provide a stimulating workout for athletes, dancers, and highly conditioned clients. Held over three days, this 18-hour Advanced course teaches exercises in the repertoire that require greater strength, stability, and flexibility.

Admissions
In the Intensive stream we’re looking for self-directed and highly motivated people with industry-specific knowledge and skills, as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ideal candidates include
- Current health and fitness professionals with prior teaching experience.
- Career changers who would like to begin their training while still working full time.
Admission requirements
- Working knowledge of functional anatomy and prior participation in an anatomy course that covers in detail the human musculoskeletal system and includes muscle attachments, actions, and basic biomechanics. Acceptable courses include the STOTT PILATES Functional Anatomy course or a university or college level anatomy or physiology course (minimum of 20–25 hours of in-class instruction). Online courses may be accepted provided they amount to a minimum of 20–25 hours of learning and include homework assignments, tests, and/or a final examination
- Minimum 30 hours participation in Pilates classes/workouts
Recommended
- 3+ years teaching movement or fitness. Applicants with a strong history of Pilates participation and/or experience instructing students/clients in another field may also be considered
